Keeping Your Skin Looking Young and Radiant

If you are concerned about your overall appearance, and you wish to remain looking young and radiant, taking care of your skin is one step that will make a huge difference in stopping the appearance of aging signs. There are several ways you can boost your skin's appearance by doing a daily regimen of maintenance tasks. Here are some ways you can slow down the appearance of aging by caring for your skin.

1. Cover Exposed Skin

When going outside, put on sunscreen even if you are not going to be in the sun for more than a few minutes. Sunscreen will protect your skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays and wearing it even when in rainy weather will help to filter out any of these rays from penetrating to your skin in any way. Put on a moisturizer first and then apply a coating of sunscreen over it about twenty minutes before you intend to go outside. Cover your arms and legs in addition to your face if you plan on driving, as UV rays can still get to you through glass.

2. Drink Plenty Of Water

If you are interested in maintaining a healthy lifestyle, you are most likely aware that drinking approximately six to eight 8 oz. glasses of water a day is recommended. Water can help the appearance of your skin by moisturizing it from the inside, giving you a smooth and supple appearance.

3. Protect In Cool Weather

When temperatures plummet, using a moisturizer on your skin will not be helpful as the water content within is rather high. This will instead promote chapping. Look for a cream made with emollients rather than moisturizing properties. This will keep your skin hydrated and looking younger.

4. Kick Bad Habits

Everyone knows that smoking is bad in general for your health. It is also a premature aging factor to the skin, causing wrinkles around the mouth area. Smoking depletes your body from Vitamin C, which is needed to maintain supple, healthy skin. Stopping smoking will save yourself from looking older than you really are. If you enjoy alcoholic beverages, drink them in moderation. Alcohol causes the blood vessels to dilate. This will bring blood close to the surface of your skin, making it look red and blotchy. It also causes dehydration of the body, leaving your skin lackluster in appearance.

5. Eat Healthy Foods

The diet you eat will help your skin's appearance. Load up on leafy greens as they are beneficial to overall skin tone. Foods with abundant Omega-3, such as tuna, salmon, walnuts, kale, spinach and flaxseed are all rich with this vitamin, helping to keep skin smooth and elastic rather than rough and rigid. Limit the amount of sugar you consume as it will cause skin to wrinkle or become dull. Sugar damages the collagen in the skin, which is a protein in the body that helps retain the elasticity. When collagen is damaged, your skin will appear brittle and may begin to sag. Eating healthy foods while maintaining a fitness routine will help keep your skin looking younger overall.

8 Tips for Preventing Age Spots

No one wants to get old, but looking old before your time can be even worse. Having skin that looks older than your actual years take a toll on your self-esteem, but there are some things you can do to look younger and feel better.

You do not have to resign yourself to age spots as you get older. Here are some tips to help you prevent these common signs of aging.

1. Always use sunscreen when you spend time outdoors.

Sun damage can happen quickly, and just 10 to 15 minutes of exposure could be enough to harm your skin.

2. Choose a sunscreen that provides the full spectrum of UVA and UVB protection.

Read the label carefully to make sure you are getting the protection you need, and reapply the sunscreen throughout the day.

La Roche-Posay Anthelios XL Very High Protection Ultra-Light Fluid SPF50+

La Roche Posay Anthelios XL Very High Protection Ultra-Light Fluid SPF50+ has an ultra-light, non-greasy fluid texture that is imperceptible with an invisible finish. Also suitable for sensitive skin to skin prone to sun intolerance. This sunscreen is fragrance-free, paraben-free, and non-comedogenic.

3. Wear a wide-brimmed hat for extra sun protection.

A sun hat is an excellent precaution if you will be traveling, hiking or enjoying other outdoor activities.

4. Use a smart skin cleansing regimen.

Wash your face thoroughly at least twice a day to remove makeup, dirt and residue from your busy day. Go easy on the makeup and choose cosmetics with natural ingredients whenever you can.

5. Make your own facial masks and use them at least once a month.

This will help keep your pores clear and deep cleanse your skin.

6. Exfoliate your skin on a regular basis.

You can use commercial exfoliating kits or make your own home version.

Everyone has to get old, but there are things you can do to keep your skin looking young as long as possible. Whether you are 18 or 88, the tips listed above can help you look younger and enjoy wonderful-looking skin.

7 Tips to Keep Your Hair and Skin Healthy and Beautiful This Winter

The winter season has much to offer, but when it comes to your hair and skin the coldest months of the year can be challenging. If you want to keep your skin and hair healthy when the temperature drops, try the following:

1. Utilize Coconut Oil

Coconut oil is well-known for being beneficial to skin, and it makes an excellent moisturizer. Coconut oil can be used many ways; you can add it to bath water to help soften skin that has been dried out by the cold or apply it directly to your face or body as a moisturizer.

2. Use a Humidifier

Many people associate using a humidifier with being sick, but having one in your room while you are sleeping is a valuable beauty secret during the winter. A humidifier can drastically increase the amount of moisture in the air, which can help keep your hair and skin from drying out during the cold months.

3. Don't Forget About Vitamin E

Vitamin E is one of the most important vitamins for soft, supple skin. It is especially beneficial during the winter, when your skin is ravaged by dry, frigid air. Taking a daily vitamin E supplement is highly recommended, but for maximum benefits you can also carefully open up a vitamin E capsule and then apply it to your skin and hair.

4. Pay Attention to Your Pillowcase

Most people do not realize that the type of pillowcase that they sleep on each night can affect the health of their hair. If you want to prevent your hair from drying out, consider purchasing a satin pillowcase. A cotton pillowcase can draw moisture from your hair, which no one needs during the winter, but a satin pillowcase will keep your hair shiny and healthy.

5. Always Wear Sunscreen

The sun may not feel very warm during winter, but it can still do a lot of damage to your skin. Even when it is cold outside, the harmful UVA rays are just as strong as they are at the height of summer. Your body may be wrapped up in layers to keep warm, but your face will still be exposed so always put on a sunscreen or facial moisturizer with an SPF of at least 15.

6. Treat Your Hair to a Hydrating Mask

Conditioner is not always enough to keep your hair healthy when it is freezing out. Take the time to apply a moisturizing and hydrating mask to your hair to keep it looking great. You don't have to spend a lot of money buying a hair mask, as there are a number of DIY masks that you can make with items in your kitchen. Consider an avocado and coconut milk hair mask, or try out a mixture of yogurt and papaya.

7. Adjust Your Winter Skincare Regime

As the seasons change and the temperatures shift, your skin will need special care to remain hydrated and looking its best. During the winter, it is important to focus on keeping your skin hydrated. Use facial products containing plant oils, algae extract, green tea, and crambe oil.

7 Amazing Anti-Aging Tips for Your Skin

Aging – so unavoidable. It can change the way your skin looks earlier than you expect, and most people find aging signs as they hit the big 3-0. Although we cannot control genetic factors such as a decrease in estrogen levels which can lead to saggy skin, there are a lot of external influences on how our skin ages. Knowing the proper anti-aging care can help slow down the clock.

1. Eat WellYou might expect skincare products to do the job when it comes to turning back the clock, but young-looking skin starts with nutrients that reach it from within the body. The skin is the largest organ of our body, after all. Therefore, maintaining a healthy diet can have a positive effect on fighting the signs of aging.

Antioxidants neutralize free radicals that lead to skin aging. Eat green and red vegetables like spinach, broccoli, tomatoes and carrots, and blue and purple berries. These foods contain antioxidants that help prevent the formation of free radicals. If you can get your hands on maqui berry, we really recommend it as these super-fruits contain the highest amount of antioxidants around. Also eat foods that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids such as fish, which help protect the skin’s moisture barrier that tends to become thin as we age.

2. Wear Sunscreen
UV light is the number one cause of wrinkles, because sun exposure can damage elastin and cause loss of collagen, which results in the appearance of wrinkles. Moreover, studies show that UVA rays are responsible for inducing the grayish, yellow-y cast you see on older skin. So, remember to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen every day, rain or shine!

3. Get Moving Exercise has immense benefits for your body and skin. Not only does it strengthen your heart and reduce risks of various diseases, it also boosts your immune system and improves circulation, which in turn brings a rosy, healthy complexion..

4. Beauty Sleep Your body and skin repair and regenerate during sleep. Research shows that if you sleep less than 6 hours a night, you are at greater risk of having a heart attack or strokes. Also, a lack of sleep makes you more agitated and prone to anger, which may trigger hormonal imbalances and signs of aging. Sleep at least 8 hours per night for maintaining good health and beautiful skin.

5. Drink Plenty of Water
We always recommend enough water. Young and beautiful skin is supple and moist. Moisture functions as a protective barrier to prevent excess fluid loss. Make sure to drink at least eight 8-oz glasses of water a day, as dehydration will make your skin look dry and wrinkled. Moreover, water helps flush out waste and toxins from your system to improve health and achieve radiant-looking skin.

6. Effective Skincare RoutineGreat skin doesn’t require complicated skincare procedures, as long as you get the basics right. Remove your makeup before going to sleep every night, and use a 3-step regime for your skin type. To achieve youthful and glowy skin, try exfoliating once a week. This is because the turnover rate of skin cells lowers as you age, resulting in loss of firmness and luster. Peeling can help remove dead skin cells to eliminate dullness while stimulating collagen growth for a firmer contour.

7. Try Retinol Cream

Consider a wrinkle cream that contains retinol, a derivative from Vitamin A. It can minimize the appearance of wrinkles, strengthens skin’s thickness and elasticity, slow down the breakdown of collagen, and fade brown spots caused by UV rays.

Slowing down the clock is not impossible, you just need to start early and remember to create a healthy and regular routine. What are your favorite anti-aging secrets? Let us know!

Are you ready for summer? Don’t forget to use the right sunscreens

Summer is an exciting season of the year because it’s all about colorful outfits, bright nails, and of course, lots of outdoor activities. While it’s fun to enjoy the sunshine, I’m sure that many of you, like me, are concerned about the damages UV rays cause on our skin. So, today I’m going to give you some information on UV rays and tips for choosing the right sunscreens. Let’s get summer-ready!

Types of UV Rays

You may have already heard about UVA and UVB, but do you know UVA can be further divided into UVA-1 and UVA-2? And what are the actual damages of UV rays on our skin? Here’s an overview.

UVA-1: long UV rays (340–400 nm); reach the dermis, causing dark pigments, skin ageing and wrinkles

UVA-2: shorter UVA rays (320–340 nm); reach the epidermis, causing skin reddening, sunburn and is the main cause of skin cancer

UVB: medium-wave UV rays (280–320 nm); reach the epidermis, causing skin reddening, sunburn and is the main cause of skin cancer

Broad Spectrum Protection is the Key

As you can see above, UVA-1 penetrates deep into our dermis and causes dark pigments which can result in unsightly freckles, but its prevalence is often ignored. How to choose an appropriate sunscreen? The number one tip is to pick a broad spectrum protection sunscreen, one that defenses our skin against both UVA and UVB, including UVA-1. There are two types of sunscreens: mineral-based and chemical. Below is a comparison of each type and some common ingredients you may like to take note of.

1. Mineral-based sunscreens:

How it works:
contain physical blockers that form a film on the face to deflect UV rays
Pros: mild on the skin, does not cause skin allergy easily
Cons:
leaves a white cast and feels greasy on skin
Common ingredients:
Zinc Oxide (blocks UVA-1, UVA-2 & UVB), Titanium Dioxide (blocks UVB & UVA-2)

2. Chemical sunscreens:

How it works:
contain chemical absorbers that are first absorbed by the skin, then interact with UV rays chemically, converting them into non-harmful substances for skin
Pros: feels light and non-greasy on the skin
Cons:
may cause skin allergy easily
Common ingredients:
Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate (blocks UVB), Avobenzone (blocks UVA-1 & UVA-2), Mexoryl SX, XL (covers UVA-1, UVA-2 & partial UVB), Diethylamino Hydroxybenzoyl Hexyl Benzoate (a.k.a. Uvinul® A Plus; covers all UVA rays), Tinosorb M & Tinosorb S (blocks UVA-1, UVA-2 & UVB)

Here’re Our Picks:
Since mineral-based and chemical sunscreens each have their own disadvantages, most sunscreens on the market are a mixture of both – getting the best of both worlds. Here are my recommendations for some of the best and most effective sunscreens.

Clinique Even Better Dark Spot Defense SPF45 / PA++++ (All Skin Types)
A pure mineral-based sunscreen formulated with Zinc Oxide and Titanium Oxide to protect against UVA-1, UVA-2 and UVB. Featuring patented Invisible Screen™ technology that leaves no white traces on your face. The texture? Melts instantly in your skin, giving you an even and radiant complexion.

How to have healthy tanned skin?

Who said that sunbathing will definitely bring you dry and wrinkled skin? You can also have a nice and healthy tanned skin, before you go, there are a few things to do:

1.     The peak UV rays hours are from 10:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. That’s the best time to go sunbathe.

2.     Evaluate your skin tone and plan your sunbathing hours accordingly. I normally can do 1 hour without getting burnt since I am naturally quite tanned. But some people can get burnt in less than 30 minutes, so be careful!

       3.     Apply sunscreen at least a half an hour before going out in the sun as it takes 20-30 minutes for it to be absorbed by the skin. See below for some of the good ones I tried before.

                                           Laneige Sun Block Oil-Free SPF 35 PA++
Laneige Sun Block Oil-Free SPF 35 PA++ with sun protection for sebum and pore control effect. Its oil-free formula gives matte touch without oily or shininess feeling.
Avène Very High Protection Emulsion SPF 50+ (Normal to Combination Sensitive Skin) has been developed for sensitive skin with a lightweight texture. It covers a very broad spectrum UV (UVB and UVB) protection using a combination of exclusive ingredients.
Sofina Perfect UV White Protect SPF 50+ PA+++

SOFINA Perfect UV White Protect SPF 50+ PA+++ is a light weight sunscreen that provides you a complete protection from the damages of sun exposure, without leaving a greasy film on the skin.
